Nepal health profile

How the country's health compares, on the indicators the World Health Organization and the World Bank publish for Nepal. Every figure carries the year it was measured, because these series are not all equally fresh and a number without a date is a different claim.

These figures come from different years. The numbers below were measured between 2005 and 2025. Some are recent national estimates; others are modelled, or simply have not been updated in years. Each one shows its own year, and anything dated 2021 or earlier is marked as dated. Use them for shape and direction, not as a current snapshot.

From the World Health Organization

Indicators the World Bank does not carry. WHO modelled estimates come with an uncertainty range, and that range is shown — a modelled figure is an estimate with edges, not a measurement.

Indicator Unit Value Year
Healthy life expectancy at birth Years lived in full health, not just alive. likely range 56.9 – 67.3 years 62.1 2023
Healthy life expectancy at 60 Healthy years still ahead at age 60. likely range 11.3 – 16.5 years 13.8 2023
Tobacco use, adults WHO modelled estimate. Carries an uncertainty range. likely range 20.5 – 29.9 % aged 15+ 25.2 2025
Mean haemoglobin, women 15-49 Low haemoglobin means anaemia. Nepal has carried a high burden. likely range 120 – 128 g/L 124 2019dated
Mean haemoglobin, pregnant women Anaemia in pregnancy raises risk for both mother and baby. likely range 109 – 116 g/L 112 2019dated
Estimated malaria cases Modelled estimate, concentrated in the lowlands and Terai. cases 37 2024
Medical doctors Headcount, all levels of the system. doctors 32,247 2024
Maternal mortality ratio, country-reported As reported by Nepal itself, which is why it differs from the modelled figure above. per 100,000 live births 281 2005dated

Reading these numbers. Country indicators are estimates, not a census. The maternal mortality ratio modelled at 142 per 100,000 (2023) and the figure Nepal itself reported — 281, from 2005 — differ by a factor of two. That gap is a real disagreement between a statistical model and a national return, not an error on this page, and both are shown rather than quietly picking the one that looks better.
